Overview[]
The books follows the farmer Uldyssian as he is drawn into a conflict between the two major religions of the time, the Cathedral of Light led by The Prophet, and the Temple of the Triune, led by the Primus. As the books develop, the two are revealed to be Inarius, a rogue angel, and Lucion, the son of Mephisto. The two are waging a hidden war against each other. Inarius, who fled heaven and originally forged the world together with other rogue angels and demons, wishes the world, called by him Sanctuary, for himself. Lucion acts on behalf of the Three, and wants to wrench the world from Inarius hands, so that the humans can be used in the war against Heaven. Hell fears that Heaven will become aware of the world if they invade it, and so quietly try to convert the population the religion of the Triune. Inarius, fearing the same, thus establishes the Cathedral.
Uldyssian, who gradually learns of this throughout the books, eventually tries to overthrow both of them and liberate humanity from their oppressive reign. Events don't quite turn out as anyone has hoped though.
