Health Globes are new item type in Diablo III. They have a chance to drop off monsters on kill or in the case of Uniques and Champions they will have a chance to drop when hit [1]. When a player walks over the health globe, it is automatically consumed even if the player is at full health. The health gained from the Health Globe replenishes slowly just like a Healing Potion would. In multiplayer games Health Globes will restore health to everyone nearby in PvM and everyone on your team in PvP.

A New Health System

Health globes were introduced in the premier showing of the game on June 28, 2008 at the Paris World Wide Invitational. They provide a completely different approach to a health system than the previous Diablo games. The Diablo III team believes "potion spamming" does not provide a very robust or interesting gameplay experience, and they believe the old system made players basically invulnerable (potions are now on a fairly long cooldown).

We changed the health model, so that players don't rely on potions. Instead they can pick up health power-ups from enemies. It doesn't change the basic way the game plays, but it gives it a little bit more depth. You don't have one answer to healing in combat – "I'm in trouble, I hit a potion." Instead, "I'm in trouble, there's a health globe over there, and there's a 20-foot demon standing between me and it." That's a really interesting situation for the player, but it works with the same complexity of interface and gameplay that we had.[2]
