Duriel, the Lord of Pain, is one of the Lesser Evils in the Diablo universe, and the final boss of Act II in Diablo II. He is found in Tal Rasha's Tomb beneath the Canyon of the Magi outside of Lut Gholein, the coastal town around which the events of Act II occur. Killing him is the final objective of the Seven Tombs quest.
He is notoriously difficult to kill at Normal difficulty, and is often considered the hardest boss on that difficulty. This is because of several factors that separate him from other boss encounters:
- The only way to effectively "run" from Duriel is to risk being interrupted in combat, cast a Town Portal, and run through, as there is no exit within reach in his chamber.
- The fight takes place in a small room with no objects or props.
- Duriel runs continuously towards the player without pause and has a heavy hitting melee attack.
- Duriel has a Holy Freeze aura similar to what the Paladin can use. The Cold chill that hits is unavoidable, even if the player is lucky enough to have an item that destroys all other forms of Freezing.
These facts makes Duriel a heavy hitter that untwinked characters have a hard time dealing with. Ranged characters will suffer since Duriel is able to continuously run up to them whenever they stop to attack, and even melee characters can run into problems due to how heavy he hits.
