The Durance of Hate was the lair of the Lord of Hatred, Mephisto. When the Zakarum were charged with defending the Prime Evil's soulstone, it was kept within the Temple of Light in the Temple City of Travincal, deep in Kurast. Mephisto managed to corrupt the entire High Council of the Zakarum however, with the exception of Khalim, the Que-Hegan, who was killed and replaced by Sankekur. Sankekur eventually became Mephisto's host.

Deep in the Durance was a portal to the Burning Hells, opened by the reunited Three Brothers to make way for Diablo. After the player defeats Mephisto, he/she follows the Lord of Terror into Hell with the Lord of Hatred's soulstone in tow.

The Durance of Hate is one of the few dungeons that shows great size variations between difficulty levels, resulting in a much larger second level of the Durance in Nightmare and Hell.
