Bartuc, or the Warlord of Blood, is a Vizjerei mage and the brother of Horazon, whose enchanted armor is the main antagonist in Legacy of Blood.

Caution: As of Diablo III, the Diablo team no longer considers the books Legacy of Blood and Demonsbane, from which some of the following information on this page was taken, to be canonical with new lore. Where new lore contradicts old lore, new lore is assumed to be more accurate to Blizzard Entertainment's current standing.

The tales of Bartuc started during the Sin War as one who had risen among the ranks of sorcerers, only to later turn to the darkness, or demon-conjuring, for which the Vizjerei clan is notorious. Eventually, even the demons that Bartuc summoned came to fear his prowess[1][2].

His armor was once a brilliant gold, but his ritual of covering his armor in the blood of the conquered stained it a crimson red. This practice led many to refer to him as the terrifying Warlord of Blood.[3] It was also rumored that he "hungered" for blood in some capacity:

"I know of only one legend that speaks of such a warrior as you describe. His story is found within the ancient chronicles of the Sin War... Stained by a thousand years of war, blood and death, the Warlord of Blood stands upon a mountain of his tattered victims. His dark blade screams a black curse to the living; a tortured invitation to any who would stand before this Executioner of Hell. It is also written that although he was once a mortal who fought beside the Legion of Darkness during the Sin War, he lost his humanity to his insatiable hunger for blood." -- Deckard Cain[4]

Bartuc's brother Horazon, with the help of other Vizjeri sorcerers, defeated him and, wary of his brother's power even in death, commanded Bartuc's body forever be hidden from the sight of man. Bartuc's magic armor was split apart and sent across the world to prevent its reuniting.[5]

"Bartuc, the brother of Horazon, was eventually lured to the side of Darkness. He was granted exceptional strength and longevity, and fought alongside the legions of Hell against the cursed Vizjerei, and eventually his own brother during the Sin War. Although Bartuc was renowned amongst the warriors of many realms, his dominance in battle came with a terrible price. An insatiable lust for mortal blood pervaded his every thought and deed. Bartuc soon became as fond of bathing in the blood of his enemies as he did of shedding it, and in time he came to be known only as the Warlord of Blood." -- Of Heaven and Hell[6]

"In the third century, two brothers rose to dominance from within the ranks of the Vizjerei clan of mages; their names were Horazon and Bartuc. Both were equally powerful and ambitious, and both were fascinated by the power one could obtain through the practice of Demonic Magics; however, the two differed in their views regarding how best to study demons. While Horazon viewed demons as a great source of power, he felt that in order to use that power best, you must harness a demon and bend him to your will. His brother, on the other hand, grew to sympathize with the demonic powers and felt (with no small influence from the demons) that the demonic forces were best understood by allying with the Hellish authorities so their secrets could be shared freely, and that is exactly what he did. Their diametrically opposed philosophies caused a great schism that split the ranks and tore the Vizjerei clan apart. When at last their fierce rivalry culminated in inevitable violence, the combatants learned too late that they had both been played as pawns by the demonic host. The ensuing battle was so great it set the very firmament aflame, and when it was complete and the stillness of remorse was all that remained, Bartuc lay dead, Horazon had vanished into self-imposed exile, and the Vizjerei had learned a costly lesson. The small surviving group of sorcerers, the remnants of the once-great Vizjerei clan, resolved forevermore to spurn Demonic Magics and set about renewing their studies in the Elemental Magics. To further ensure that a similar tragedy could never happen again, they formed a secret order whose sole purpose was to police the mage clans, destroying corruption wherever they found it. This was the birth of the Viz-Jaq'taar, the Order of the Mage Slayers-otherwise known as the Assassins." -- On the Assassins[7]

"In his madness, Bartuc, who even the demons who had first seduced him had eventually come to fear, had bathed himself before each battle in the blood of previously fallen foes. His armor, once brilliant gold, had become forever stained by his sinful acts." -- Legacy of Blood[8]

In Diablo II

There is an in-game item for the Assassin called Bartuc's Cut-Throat Greater Talons.

In Legacy of Blood

In Legacy of Blood, Bartuc's armor takes control of Norrec Vizharan in its task of reuniting with its helmet, which is in the posession of General Augustus Malevolyn.[9]
